Chapter 09

“No way…” Eliza still couldn’t believe it. Her breakfast remained untouched as she stared at the newspaper, reading the headline for the fourth time.

“It’s hard to believe,” Flavio said in a weary voice, rubbing his eyes and shaking his head as he ate. “My phone’s been ringing all morning. Eduardo says the department is packed with reporters even from the capital. Never seen so many at once. He says they’re interviewing anyone.”

Eliza opened the newspaper so fast she almost ripped it. Chief of Police suspected of corruption. That alone made her tremble with rage, but underneath those words were even more infuriating.

Chief of Police, Djalma dos Santos Silva, is suspected of forcing the investigation of corruption towards the mayor and the town’s council, away from himself. An anonymous source said the investigators had direct orders to ignore anything that could lead to the deep corruption inside the police department…

That’s a lie! Eliza trembled so much she had trouble reading the rest. She handed the newspaper back to her father; she didn’t have to read the rest to know it would only make her even more enraged.

There’s no way he’d do that. That mayor… Though she only had talked to him during and a little after the poker game, she still remembered. Bianca said that the party was a bribe party. I thought it was a joke.

Bianca… Imagining what her girlfriend could be going through right now was enough to make her stomach tighten. She raced to her bedroom and turned in the direction of the redhead’s house as she called her. C’mon, Red, pick up…

Eliza focused, but nothing happened. With deep breaths, she stared at the wall. This time it became transparent, but no matter how much she tried, she couldn’t see more than a few meters. I can’t focus right now, she thought, clicking her tongue. All she could think of was Bianca and her family. Pick up, pick up, pick up.

But no matter how much she wanted, there was only the dial tone.

She tried again. C’mon, Bianca, pick up. I wanna hear your voice… Eliza never thought she would ever hate that sound so much.

“Bianca!” she shouted when the redhead finally picked up.

“Hey, Liz. Good morning.” Though she spoke in a normal tone, Eliza could tell it was forced. “Hearing your voice first thing in the morning is the best way to wake up. But you know I’m not a morning person.”

I doubt you could get some sleep with all that’s happening. “Yeah, I know. I also know that you snore. A lot,” she joked to lighten the mood.

“I told you it wasn’t me! Maybe when you got your powers, your ears did too, so you keep hearing someone else snoring,” Bianca replied in her playful tone though it was stiff.

“That doesn’t make sense. According to all those movies you made me watch, you can only enhance the other senses when you lose one.”

“You got me there…” They both chuckled, but they soon stopped, and the silence grew.
